What is the International Baccalaureate and what is it for?

The Diploma is the third program of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB), a non-profit organization whose mission is to create a better world through education. It is a demanding program created for students between the ages of 16 and 18. It seeks to train students with an international mentality and education who can play an active role in society and in the world, who develop critical thinking and make informed decisions with them that can have a positive impact on society.

How to obtain the International Baccalaureate?

The Diploma is obtained through a rigorous international and standardized evaluation system that has different components that will be scored and moderated by international evaluators. This standardized system allows a fair evaluation at the international level.

What are the subjects of the International Baccalaureate?

The International Baccalaureate works with different groups of subjects:

G1: Studies in Language and Literature

  • G3: Individuals and Societies

  • G5: Mathematics

  • G6: Arts / optional

There is also an established schedule for the core courses: Theory of Knowledge, Extended essay and CAS.

Who can access the International Baccalaureate?

Students who are about to enter the 11th / 5th grade of Secondary level who mainly meet the requirement of being motivated to follow a demanding but manageable program.

In addition, they must have passed all 10th / 4th grade subjects and, in the case of schools with MYP, also have passed the personal project.

How long does the IB last?

The Diploma program lasts for 18 months. At Altair, it takes place in grades 11th/5th of secondary school and 12th/6th of secondary school.

The differences between an IB school and a bilingual school.

Although bilingual schools work on the development of knowledge of the language and its culture, the diploma provides an international perspective that goes beyond the management of a specific language.

The IB wants and seeks the development of citizens of the world by providing a perspective that allows the knowledge of realities that range from the local to the national, regional, international and global.

The perfect age to study the IB

As indicated, this program is designed for students who are in grade 11th or 5th of secondary school. That is, around 16 years of age.

What level of English do you have to have to study the IB?

A level of English B1 / B2 is recommended, that is to say between PET / FCE.

Studying the IB in Peru or the rest of the world: are there any difference?

The program offered in the different countries is the same because students take the same international exams depending on the hemisphere.

However, each school has determined the course offer considering the preferences of its students and the strengths of each institution. It is in this second point where the main differences will be found.

How many points does it take to pass the IB?

To pass the IB you need 24 points out of 45. There are certain conditions and requirements in relation to the level of courses (intermediate level or higher) and core courses (Extended essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS)
